Georgia Milestones represents a significant change and importantly – an opportunity for our state. This opportunity allows us to recalibrate, as a state, and refocus on teaching and learning as a primary emphasis with assessment and accountability serving a supporting role.
Features include:
– inclusion of constructed-response items in addition to selected-response items
– inclusion of a writing component (in response to text)
– inclusion of norm-referenced items in every grade and content area to complement the criterion-referenced information and to provide a national comparison; and transition to online administration over time, with online administration considered the primary mode of administration and paper-pencil back-up until transition is completed.
Short Constructed Response:
- 8-10 Sentences
- Topic Sentence--Restate prompt
- Two (2) pieces of text evidence; use direct quotes; cite passage number AND paragraph
- On Tuesday, use one piece of text evidence from each passage
- Minimum of three (3) transitional words
- Must have a concluding sentence
Extended Constructed Response:
- 3-5 paragraphs
- Introduction--can be short, 3-4 sentences, attention grabber, general overview, clear thesis statement
- If argumentative prompt--you MUST pick a side and state a clear position
- Body paragraphs--use outline for SCR; must have four (4) pieces of text evidence~two from each passage
- For text evidence, use a blend of direct quotes and paraphrase; cite passage number and paragraph numbers
- Use ellipses for direct quotes at least once but no more than twice
- Minimum of six (6) transitional words; one at the beginning of each body paragraph and at conclusion; a few "sprinkled" throughout paragraphs
